Canvas Arts & Crafts in Nigeria
HomeArticlesAll about canvases - how to choose the perfect basis for your creativity?
Before the appearance of the first canvases, artists painted on prepared wooden boards. But such paintings required special storage conditions and eventually collapsed: cracked, deformed, moldy due to high humidity, destroyed by the woodworm beetle. Many world masterpieces were preserved only thanks to the invention of the technology of transferring paintings from a wooden base to canvas: Mona Lisa by Leonardo da Vinci, Madonna Conestabile by Raphael Santi, pair paintings by Sandro Botticelli Archangel Gabriel and Maria.

A quality base maintains the integrity and brightness of the paint layer. For example, the Russian painter Abram Arkhipov used the canvases of the Moscow factory of the engineer-technologist R. G. Friedlander, from which the modern company "GAMMA", grew: the strong adhesion of paints to the surface of the ground allowed his paintings not to lose their original co Canvas Arts & Crafts in Nigeria lor saturation. Now Arkhipov's works are kept in the Tretyakov Gallery and the State Russian Museum.
Contemporary artists are not limited in choosing the ideal basis for creativity: the canvas is durable, withstands many layers of paint. But how do you choose a quality product? What should you pay attention to?
To answer these questions, consider the main characteristics of the canvas: base, fabric, grain and density, soil.
The canvas on a stretcher is suitable for painting in the studio and at home, it is convenient to transport it - the work can be removed from the base and rolled up. The canvas on the stretcher breathes and dries more evenly.
Why is it important? If the canvas sags over time under the weight of the paint or the base deforms, the paint layer may crack and peel off. The modular stretcher allows you to maintain and timely adjust the web tension.
Why do we need bumpers on rails? The canvas must be taut on the stretcher and not in contact with it, otherwise the canvas may stick to the slats and the tension will change. The collars ensure minimal contact of the canvas with the stretcher.
GAMMA modular canvas stretchers are made from natural pine, wedges are included in the set. All types of stretchers are assembled from strips with sides, and for large-sized works canvases are provided on thickened stretchers.

A canvas on a dense basis is more convenient for working outside the home or studio - you can write on it without an easel. The main advantage of a dense base over a capricious canvas on a stretcher is that it is more difficult to damage or deform finished paintings.
Time-tested base at an affordable price. Canvas on cardboard is suitable for students and novice artists for sketches, studies in small and medium formats.
Compressed wood fiber sheet is suitable for the same purposes as cardboard, but is stronger and slightly heavier. Some artists prefer a dense base because of its ability to withstand many layers of paint and the attachment of additional decorative elements.
